Type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease and may cause damage to the heart and circulatory system even before the person is diagnosed. 16 million people in the US have prediabetes — the blood glucose level is abnormally high, but not yet at the level of diabetes. Within 10 years, without intervention, these individuals will develop diabetes. Lifestyle changes such as decreasing the intake of carbohydrates can help, but reducing the stress on the pancreas, as can exercise to improve metabolism and lose weight.
