Q&A: Would you suggest me to get tested for Diabetes?

Question by mkn6321: Would you suggest me to get tested for Diabetes?
I have a family history of diabetes. I am 14, overweight, but tall. I looked up the symptoms, and I have frequent urination, & excessive thirst. I don’t know it this had anything to do with it, but if I don’t eat a good lunch at school, when the bell rings to go home, I get up to go to my locker, and I am extremely weak, and feel like my legs could just give out, But then If I go buy a juice, or a granola bar, I immediately feel better, would that also be a “sign”?.
Should I get checked for diabetes?.

Thank you,
-Mary Kate.

  1. It's That Guy says:

If you know someone who is diabetic, he or she will have a glucometer (blood glucose meter) and probably would be happy to test you. That can rule diabetes out, but it can’t tel you you have it. If you have high blood sugar it could be lots of things. When a doctor suspects diabetes he orders a whole series of tests.

Lots of people, especially at your age, get hypoglycemia, low blood sugar, at the end of the day, and eating something sugary makes them feel better. That has nothing to do with diabetes. But if you are ‘pre-diabetic’, you should learn how to control your diet, you should eat and get exercise as if you were diabetic.
