Question by Dentist In Training!: What are my odds, I feel they are low but I’m a little paranoid?
I have a question about HIV infection. I’m 20 years old, female. Last year after getting out of a sexually abusive relationship, I developed an addiction to sex ( The guy I was in a relationship with was disease free, HIV free) I had found a few men, 3 to be exact and had sex with them. None of them known to have HIV, or any STD’s. With one guy, we had protected sex once and unprotected sex once, who I also gave oral sex to (he did not ejaculate in my mouth, or vaginally). The second guy was my boyfriend, we had unprotected sex 3 times, I never gave him oral and he never ejaculated inside me. The third guy, I gave him oral and we had protected sex once. None of these guys used drugs, or had STD’s. I also do not use drugs, and I get tested for STD’s every year. I’ve been abstinent for 9 months and am very healthy. I don’t have any symptoms, but I do know HIV can be dormant for years. I also have been vaccinated for Hepatitis B and HPV.
I’ve had 5 sexual partners all together, I know that 2 of them were zero risk.
All this activity was over 9 months ago, some of them a year ago.
I never had any “early warning” symptoms, I’m tired most of the time because I get about 4 hours asleep at night. I don’t have oral symptoms (no thrush or oral lesions) My lymph nodes are not swollen, my doctor felt them in June and said I was physically healthy. I got tested for diabetes and cholesterol, everything was fine and my doctor was not concerned. I live in the suburbs of Minneapolis since I know location sometimes matters. Maybe I’m just paranoid because I’m learning about infectious diseases at school.
I’m on an oral contraceptive as well so I wasn’t being 100% careless. Also, I enjoy it more to use a condom, the only reason I didn’t with my ex is because he had a severe allergic reaction previously.

Your fine. If you’ve went through all that testing then something would have shown up by now.

Even though you have had three partners and with some of them unprotected sex you should be fine. You do need to be careful with both the oral and vaginal sex even though these guy’s didn’t ejaculate in you. STD’s can be carried in the sperm that is released prior to a full ejaculation. This pre-ejaculation sperm does carry both of these in them which then enter your body through the gums and mouth that might have any small opening. Please remember to make sure these decisions you’re making now with thinking you might be fine to keep on being both tested and have the health you do now. It sounds as if you’ve been very careful and know what to do and not to do. It might be a good idea just to stick to the conventional protection even though it’s not as enjoyable. Good luck and God Bless
