Question by joie: How Hard Would It Be For A Disabled Veteran…?
How hard would it be for a disabled veteran to get his Social Security Disability Benefit? My husband is a disabled veteran (20%) who became very ill while serving overseas during VietNam. He is 80% of the time in terrible pain & his joints swell up bad. Sometimes his knees swollen badly. He gets around but it is not without pain. He is considering after yrs. of working at a desk job, of filing for his Social Security Disability Benefits. How hard would it be for him to do this & how long before he would hear anything back? Also, could they possibly turn a disabled veteran down for this benefit? He also has “out-of-control” Type 2 diabetes. Thank you for your help!

Just get all the medical paperwork verifying his stuff and file. Then you are stuck waiting. So many moochers get it a real disabled person should have no problem. God Bless and good luck.

All he needs to do is apply. I did under similar circumstances and got it approved in 90 days.
thing for him to do is try and get his VA upgraded. SS is an entirely different, and even more burdensome process. SS routinely turns down most people that apply. Most counties have Veterans Service officers that can assist with this, or contact your local VFW post for info.
He just has to apply for it, and never give up. My dad fought for over a year and finally got them.
Social security looks at the disabilties of a person as being severe enough to prevent them from doing work. Being a vet has no bearing on their determination process. I recommend pursuing an increase in his rating from VA and filing with SS as well !
